“Universal Life Energy”

A Japanese word meaning "Universal Life Energy," Reiki is the Universal Life Force that infuses all living matter. It is the energy that flows through every living being. A form of Holistic healing, it used to help balance and harmonize the body’s own energy system. Reiki healing targets our energetic fields and assists the body in repairing itself as needed to bring it back to homeostasis.

Brief History

Dr. Mikao Usui

Reiki can be traced back to Tibet 3,000 years ago. It is believed Reiki first originated during the time of the indigenous shamanic civilization known as the Bon. It would be later immersed into Buddhist practices throughout Tibet. In the late 1800's, Reiki was rediscovered by Dr. Mikao Usui, who through his research and personal accounts would develop the official Reiki method. In the 1940's the practice later spread to the U.S. through Hawaii, and then to Europe in the 1980's.

How does it work?

Reiki is best known as an alternative healing modality based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient. Reiki can be absorbed at the cellular level, thus enhancing the performance of the internal body and the positive energy circulating within us. The practitioner is used as a funnel to activate the natural healing processes of the body and restore the energetic body to a balanced state.

Also known as "Energy Medicine," Reiki aims to help the flow of energy and remove blockages in a similar way to acupuncture or acupressure. When energy becomes stagnant within our bodies we can become over stimulated and our natural defense network becomes disabled. A weak immune system can give way for other more chronic disorders. Improving the flow of energy in and around the body, may help enable relaxation, help reduce pain, speed up the healing process, and reduce other symptoms of illness.

Referred to as palm healing or hands-on healing, Reiki has become synonymous with a natural system of self care, that aids in emotional and spiritual renewal. Reiki can be used on the person as a whole, or on specific parts of the body. It is also possible to receive Reiki at a distance, this is known as "Distance Reiki."

Reiki is taught by Reiki Master Practitioners, who have trained in the tradition passed down. Practitioner's at every level must go through a process of initiation/attunement to the Reiki energy. They are then able to treat themselves and others by aiding in their individual development and spiritual growth.
